The Dodge Dart has been billed as a fuel-efficient, safe compact since its reintroduction in 2013. The 2015 model comes as advertised, having earned top scores in crash ratings from both the IIHS and the NHTSA. The Dart comes with a spacious cabin, an excellent optional electronics interface, quick acceleration, and a fuel-efficient 41 mpg highway.

Kia Forte
Both the Forte LX and EX earned top safety ratings from the NHTSA and the IIHS. The Forte doesn’t skimp on fuel efficiency, either; the LX and EX get nearly 40 mpg highway. The coupe and sedan are known for spacious interiors, easy-to-use controls, and many excellent features.

Chevy Sonic
The base-model Sonic (a turbocharged version is available) gets a 40 mpg highway. This Chevrolet earned an impressive overall five-star safety rating from NHTSA. The car is one of Edmunds.com’s top picks for safety, comfort, and value. For a compact car, it gets excellent reviews for cabin space and comfort.
