Should I Go for a 4-Cylinder or V6 Engine When Shopping for a Used Midsized Crossover?

V6 vs 4-Cylinder Engines in Midsized Crossovers

When you are shopping at our Raleigh, NC, store location, you can find an excellent selection of high-quality used midsized crossovers. These vehicles are great for families and adventurers because of their 3-row seating configurations and expansive cargo dimensions. Some of the most popular models include the Toyota Highlander, Chevy Traverse, Honda Pilot, Kia Sorento, Mazda CX-9, and Mitsubishi Outlander – just to name a few!

If you have started looking closely at these vehicles, you will notice that some models are outfitted with a V6 engine while others are equipped with a 4-cylinder engine. Some models (such as the Toyota Highlander or Volkswagen Atlas) can be available with either engine size. With these engine options to consider, you may be wondering which one is right for you. Luckily, we are happy to offer some guidance!

Benefits of a 4-Cylinder Engine in a Midsized Crossover

The biggest benefit of having a 4-cylinder engine in your new-to-you midsized crossover is that you will enjoy efficient fuel numbers – and even more so if that engine is a hybrid variation. However, you will typically have less power to enjoy and you may not be able to tow as much (your maximum towing capacity could be anywhere between 2,000 and 3,500 pounds depending on the model), and you will want to make sure that you do not overexert your vehicle. An exception to this is if the engine has turbo power or other technologies that give it an extra boost in horsepower and torque numbers, and those models (such as the Subaru Ascent) can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

Benefits of a V6 Engine in a Midsized Crossover

While it will be a little thirstier, you will enjoy higher power numbers with a V6. With that extra power already on hand, the engine and vehicle won’t need to work as hard when towing a heavy trailer, trekking through steep mountain passes, or getting up to speed when merging onto a busy highway. And less work means that your engine will run a little cooler, which will typically mean fewer repairs in the long run.
