Which Vehicles Were Shown in the Movie “Twister”?

Vehicles from the Film “Twister”

Last night, we were scrolling through Netflix, almost certain that we would watch a few episodes of The Office when we saw that Twister was available for viewing! We always love this movie thanks to the edge-of-your-seat drama, special effects, and fantastic characters (and we MIGHT have a soft spot for Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt). We also love the variety of vehicles that make an appearance in the film. Here are a few vehicles that got plenty of screen time:

What to Do When You Spot a Tornado While on the Road

1995 Dodge Ram

The most prominent vehicle in the film was Bill Harding’s (played by Bill Paxton) brand-new red 1995 Dodge Ram pick-up truck. The truck became the main vehicle after Jo’s (played by Helen Hunt) 1982 Jeep pickup was destroyed by one of the many encountered storms. The 1995 Dodge Ram served Bill and Jo extremely well throughout much of the film, but in the end, was sacrificed to a monster twister so that their scientific instruments could take a ride in the winds and send data back to them. And the brand-new truck only had liability insurance coverage! A fun note that we would like to add is that during filming, a 1500 and 2500 model were both used. If you look closely throughout the film, the number of lugnuts on the wheels changes.

1985 GMC Vandura Bus

Affectionately known as “The Barn Burner”, this large vehicle was driven by silly Dustin Davis (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman), who was part of Bill and Jo’s team of storm chasers. Luckily, the vehicle survived the entirety of the film.

1980s Ford F-Series Truck

This was another vehicle that was part of the vehicle caravan for Jo and Bill. There is some debate as to whether it is from 1982, 1984, or 1986. Either way, it still served the team well and it was outfitted with a camper topper to house scientific equipment. Like “The Barn Burner”, the truck survived the storms.

1989 Chevy Suburban

Since Chevy is a top rival of Dodge, it makes sense that the brand was used for Bill and Jo’s rival Jonas Miller (played by Cary Elwes), who had stolen their technology ideas and was trying to be the first to get to the storms so he could have all the glory. Spoiler alert: the Suburban and Jonas both get sucked up in a twister and smashes to the ground in a burst of flames.
